Released From Hospital

The police officer who was seriously injured in a fatal crash with a drunk driver has been released from the hospital.

Suffolk County Police Officer Christian Vidal was released from Stony Brook University Hospital on Friday, Sept. 27 around 10:30 a.m., officials say.

Police say Vidal was driving northbound on Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore when a southbound vehicle veered into the northbound lanes and struck his vehicle on Sunday, Sept. 1.

The driver, who police say was intoxicated, was killed in the crash. Vidal was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with severe injuries including a pelvic fracture, a hip dislocation and a ruptured aorta.

Police say Vidal also developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) as a result of trauma and was on life support for a prolonged period in an “extremely critical” condition.

Upon his release from the hospital, Vidal was transported by ambulance to a rehabilitation facility.
